Before you begin the repair process, you will need to determine if your socket is actually damaged.

The following repair work described in this article requires taking apart the laptop and soldering directly onto the motherboard. If you are not experienced with this kind of work, it would be advisable to have a professional repair technician do the job for you.

1. Disassemble the laptop. Have containers ready to put the screws in so you don’t lose them. Remember to write down where each screw goes. Using a search engine to find instructions on how to take apart your particular laptop can be helpful.

2. Remove the motherboard from the case.

3. Position the motherboard so the power socket is on the bottom. This will allow you to have access to the joints.

Power sockets have many joints. The socket is held in place by joints on the side. If there are any spaces or cracks in the solder, you might be able to resolder the joints.

To resolder the joints, you will need a 25 watt soldering iron. Anything stronger than that could possibly damage the board. You will also need rosin solder.

To begin the resoldering process:

1. Plug in the iron and allow a few minutes for it to completely warm up. To see if it is ready, attempt to melt one or two pieces of solder.

3. Keep pulling out solder until you have a piece that is a few inches in length.

5. Take the end of the piece of solder you just created and push it near the joint. The solder should then begin to melt, flowing on to the joint. After you have created a small pile of solder, take away the iron and allow a few seconds for the solder to cool off.

6. Repeat this process for all of the other joints.

You may now reassemble the laptop and test the power socket. If the socket is still not functioning, you will need to get a new socket. There are many places to find replacement sockets online.

Along with the tools you will require to resolder joints, you will also need a desoldering braid. To replace the power socket:

1. The desoldering braid should be pulled out and placed along a solder joint.

2. Put the desoldering braid between the joint and the iron tip.

3. The desoldering braid should absorb all of the solder. If it does not, you may be required to use some new solder to resolder the joint. Occasionally, solder that is old does not melt easily, so you should try again.

4. Continue to desolder every joint in the same manner.

5. Remove the socket from the board after it becomes loose. It should be easy to remove, so do not use any unnecessary force to remove it. This could cause damage to the landing pads that create the electrical connection.

6. Install the new power socket where the old one used to be.

7. The iron should be put on a solder joint. Using a length of solder, a small pile of solder should be created by putting the end to the joint.

8. Continue the same soldering process for every joint.
